“Zikerria’s story is all too common.  Transgender people face tremendous discrimination in the workplace.  According to a recent survey by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality, 47% of transgender people report being fired, or denied a job or promotion, just because of who they are.”

New York State Senate Rejects Gay Marriage

thegang:

The defeat revealed stark divides: All 30 of the Republican senators opposed the bill, as did most of the members from upstate New York and Long Island. Support was heaviest among members from New York City and Westchester County and among the Senate’s 10 black members (!!). Seven of the Senate’s 10 women voted for it.

What can be said when one of the country’s most “progressive” states couldn’t muster up enough courage to provide equal marriage rights to gay people? Senator Kevin S. Parker (a Brooklyn Democrat) stated that the vote was “ the worst example of political cowardice” he’d ever seen. “Clearly people said things prior to coming to the floor and behaved differently.” So people were ultimately afraid of how they would be viewed, and intimidated by the reactions of others.

Well, I must say I’m tired of the bullshit.

It’s wrong that gay people don’t have the same marriage rights as their straight counterparts – period. When are people going to realize that giving us rights does not undermine the ones they already have – it enhances them, validates them even?

Richard E. Barnes, the executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference, made this statement: “Advocates for same-sex marriage have attempted to portray their cause as inevitable, However, it has become clear that Americans continue to understand marriage the way it has always been understood, and New York is not different in that regard. This is a victory for the basic building block of our society.” Wrong, buddy. It is inevitable. So get your weight up ‘cause we’re coming for it.

Nineteen-year-old, Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado’s body was found burned, decapitated and dismembered on Nov. 14 in Cayey, a city only a few miles away from his hometown in Caguas.

According to an iReport by Christopher Pagan, “He was a very well known person in the gay community of Puerto Rico, and very loved.”

Pagan said, “Never in the history of Puerto Rico has a murder been classified as a hate crime. Even though we have to follow federal mandates and laws, many of the laws in which are passed in the USA such as Obama’s new bill, do not always directly get practiced in Puerto Rico.”

Pagan also noted the public remarks from a police investigator for the case that ‘people who lead this type of lifestyle need to be aware that this will happen’.

Towleroad translated gay activist Pedro Julio Serrano’s response:

“It is inconceivable that the investigating officer suggests that the victim deserved his fate, like a woman deserves rape for wearing a short skirt. We demand condemnation of this investigator and demand that Superintendent Figueroa Sancha replace him with someone capable of investigating this case without prejudice.”

According to Pagan, the story has only made local headlines and deserves international coverage.

Evidence Suggest People Can’t “Pray Away the Gay”

“As long as prejudice and discrimination exist, some gay men and lesbians will feel pressure to try to change their sexual orientation. Unfortunately, there are organizations, such as Focus on the Family, that exploit such vulnerable people and their fears of rejection by family, church and society. Recently, Focus on the Family rolled into Birmingham, Alabama with its much-hyped road show, “Love Won Out,” which offers false hope and broken promises.

It is important that one realize that such efforts are rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization in America, such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The America Psychiatric Association says that attempts to change sexual orientation can cause, “anxiety, depression and self-destructive behavior.”

In August, the American Psychological Association released a landmark report that said, “There is insufficient evidence” for therapists to claim conversion therapy works. The APA report also cautioned so-called “ex-gay” counselors not to mislead clients by telling them that their sexual orientation can be changed…..”

Recently, the American Psychological Association passed a resolution stating that therapy focusing on trying to change a patient’s sexual identity to heterosexual is pretty unlikely to change anything. An APA task force looked at over 80 studies, beginning in 1960, that were conducted using therapy designed to change a person’s sexuality to straight and came to the conclusion that they weren’t very effective and was more harmful than anything. The American Psychological Association has suggested that mental health care providers should help clients with their life style instead of trying to change it by exploring  ”possible life paths that address the reality of their sexual orientation, reduce the stigma associated with homosexuality, respect the client’s religious beliefs, and consider possibilities for a religiously and spiritually meaningful and rewarding life.”

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) — An Indian court on Thursday ruled that consensual sex between adults of the same gender is legal in the country, attorneys said.

Human Rights Watch called the ruling “a victory for basic rights to privacy, non-discrimination and liberty.”

UNAIDS, the joint United Nations program on AIDS, also applauded the ruling, saying it restores dignity and human rights.

It was not immediately clear whether the ruling would eventually lead to legalization of gay marriages in the country.

“This, I think, will be the next level of demand from the gay community,” Jaisingh said.

Jaisingh said she has fought for legalization of homosexuality for seven years on behalf of the Naz Foundation. The group says its “primary aim is to improve the sexual health and human rights of marginalized males who have sex with males, their partners and families in South Asia and elsewhere.”

The court decision was issued amid plans for federal discussion of Section 377, which has sparked a religious outcry in conservative India.

Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh leaders have warned that they will oppose moves to decriminalize homosexuality.

Any homosexual act without the consent of either partner remains a criminal offense, however, Indira Jaisingh, counsel for the nonprofit Naz Foundation which had challenged the law, told CNN.

The ruling means the law — Indian penal code section 377, which had criminalized consensual homosexual acts between adults — has been partly struck down but remains in place as far as forced homosexual acts are concerned.

The verdict will affect law enforcement all around India because it deals with a law enacted by the federal parliament.

Government prosecutors did not immediately oppose the judgment, Jaisingh said, but they have that option.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs opposed changes to the law on grounds that decriminalizing homosexual conduct would “open the floodgates of delinquent behavior.”

But on Wednesday, Home Minister P. Chidambaram indicated that the government might have “new thinking” on the issue.

Call to Action - Duke University, Durham NC

Thanks amindy07 for the heads up! pulled info from the facebook event:

On Monday April 20, the Westboro Baptist Church will be gracing Duke with its presence, from 7:30am-8:00am. For those of you who don’t know, this group has been labeled a terrorist group by the ACLU, and spews some of the most ludicrous hate speech of any groups currently at work in the US.

“Well, we wish it were 33,000 killed, but we are thankful for 33.” (In reference to the VTech shootings.)

“The Lord God Almighty killed [the people who died on 9/11], looked at them in the face, laughed and mocked at each one of them as he cast each one of them into hell.”

“This is the hypocritical, fag-infested, fag-run United States of America and we’re supposed to respect that fag rag flag?”

These warped and attention-seeking sheep are hardly worth anyone’s time, and make their profit off of inciting bystanders to violence against them.

IN LIGHT OF THIS, Duke University chaplains and religious leaders are hosting a peaceful breakfast in front of the chapel, as a quiet but forceful show of support for Duke’s LGBT community, it’s allies, ROTC, and all those groups who have been targeted by Fred Phelps and the WBC. We cannot engage them, this would only play into their hands and give them the attention they crave. Instead, let them protest on their own, ignored, while we gather as a united community to celebrate our diverse campus.

THIS IS A CALL TO PEACEFUL ACTION. Come in your LOVE=LOVE shirt, eat a nice breakfast w/ friends. Let’s take this opportunity to show our support for ALL the communities that make up Duke campus.

In order for this to really have an impact we need the Chapel steps to be covered in a WAVE of LOVE=LOVE shirts and students mingling, unfazed by the bigotry being brandished just outside our campus. SO INVITE ALL YOUR FRIENDS! Drag them out of bed Monday morning! JUST BE THERE!

Date: Monday, April 20, 2009
Time: 7:30am - 8:00am
Location: In front of the Chapel, Duke University
City/Town: Durham, NC

Amazon’s Epic Fail

I’m sure you’ve heard as it’s been all over the internet this weekend that Amazon.com had a “glitch” which caused all of their gay and lesbian books to be classified as Adult books, thus removing their sales ranking (which is the basis of their search engine algorithums). Now, if you search for books using the term “homosexuality”, the very first item that comes up is A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality. Hmm.. sounds like SOMEONE at Amazon.com is a big homophobe for a “glitch” this big and intentional to happen.

I have always been skeptical of Amazon.com since doing volunteer research work for the now extinct BuyBlue.org which researched financial contributions of CEO’s of top businesses and corporations. CEOs of Amazon.com, unsurprisingly, gave generously to Bush Jr’s presidential campaign.

Stop supporting Amazon.com and support businesses that aren’t royally screwing you over. Just because they are the biggest online retailer, doesn’t mean they are the only one. Try Powells.com, who tweeted “That certainly is disturbing. Fortunately, Powell’s will never censor this material” after hearing about the Amazon controversy.

AMAZON EPIC FAIL!

UPDATE: Turns out the whole controversy was the works of a hacker and not Amazon.com, but whatever. Major corporations that support republicans still suck. So don’t give them your money.

UPDATE: So was it really a hacker or did Amazon hire a hacker to take the blame so they can slip out of this mess?

guess we’ll find out as things unfold…

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage — and the first to do so with a legislature’s vote.

The Legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas’ veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.

The vote came nine years after Vermont adopted its first-in-the-nation civil unions law.

It’s now the fourth state to permit same-sex marriage. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others. Their approval of gay marriage came from the courts.

Source: USA TODAY

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the Obama administration will sign a U.N. declaration calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality that President George W. Bush had refused to endorse. U.S. officials said Tuesday they had notified the French sponsors of the declaration that the administration wants to be added as a supporter of the declaration. The Bush administration was criticized in December when it was the only Western government that refused to sign. The officials said the administration had decided to sign the declaration to demonstrate that the United States supports human rights for all around the world.

From the Washington Blade:

The Obama administration has appointed lesbian attorney Elaine Kaplan as general counsel for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, where she will serve under the office’s gay director, John Berry.

Kaplan’s appointment was announced Tuesday by OPM acting director Kathie Ann Whipple.

“With Kaplan’s appointment, OPM gains the expertise of an individual with more than 25 years of legal experience in the fields of federal sector labor and employment law who is uniquely qualified to serve the agency in its role as the president’s chief advisor on federal human resource issues,” Whipple said in a statement.

From wmur.com:
A New Hampshire house committee is hearing a bill about transgender access to public restrooms.

Sponsors of House Bill 415 said the bill is designed to combat discrimination of transsexuals in public housing, businesses and public accommodations like bars and restaurants. This bill defines gender identity and expression and adds it to the list of classes of people protected from discrimination.”There are hundreds, if not thousands of transgendered people who live and work in New Hampshire,” said Claire Ebel, of the American Civil Liberties Union. “They deserved to be protected against discrimination.”
