Thousands march in Taipei for gay marriage
Thousands of people from Taiwan’s LGBT community marched through the streets of Taipei on Saturday to demand recognition of same-sex marriage and equal rights. The island’s seventh annual Gay Pride Parade, with an estimated turnout of 25,000, also attracted supporters from neighbouring Hong Kong, Japan and South East Asian countries.
“We urge the government to better protect gay human rights including same-sex unions so we can have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples” said chief organiser Tung Chu-chu.

Go for it, Russian Queeros! (And let’s hope no one gets hurt.)
Last night was UNCW PRIDE’s last official meeting of the year. We came together as a group to discuss the programming we put on this year and the kinds of things we’d like to do next year. This year we were honored along with Mi Gente, the campus’s Latino organization, for putting on the most programming. Next year, we want to be even bigger and better.
This year our membership reached 120 people on the facebook group—3 times more members than last year—yet we only averaged around 15 people per meeting. Our programs were well attended at times (Divas Live brought over 250 people!!!) but there were definitely times when we were in a room that was next to empty (most notably at Y U Scared?, a program that centered around homophobia and hate speak). I realize that the reason for this seems very simple—drag show=fun, talking about homophobia=not so much—but our job isn’t to be an entertainment group.
We did talk about some programs with entertainment value. We just decided that there needs to be some sort of educational value to them. We generated a huge list of queer films that we can pull from next year and years to come. We are still looking for more, if any of you out there have any contributions especially since the community makes up quite a bit of our attendance at these events.
After the general body meeting, the executive board met for just over 2 hours to start setting up fall programming, and we actually did all right. We’ve got most of the fall laid out—believe me when I say that the previous administration was lucky to have planned something 2 weeks in advanced.
We even nailed down the events for our fall Pride Week! I have to say that I’m really excited to see what comes of these events. I do have something to ask of all of you, though. We want to have a speaker that will draw a broad crowd for National Coming Out Day (Sunday, October 11th). We’re open to suggestions. The suggestion that we have right now is Scott Turner Schofield (http://speakoutnow.org/userdata_display.php?modin=50&uid=2791).

Our fellow queero, Victoria, recently gave me an update on the projects and activities UNCW’s PRIDE group has in store for this semester. Here’s the run down. Thanks again Victoria for keeping the community outside of UNCW aware of all the hard work PRIDE is doing!
Pride week is going to be from April 13-18. UNCW Presents is already putting on a Diversity Week at that time so PRIDE is going to collaborate.
We plan to kick off Pride Week in Lumina on Monday April 13 with Y U Scared?: A LGBTIQA Program Confronting Homophobia. This program consists of showing media clips that depict homophobia then discussing it. There will be a panel to answer questions. If anyone has any ideas for clips that can be shown, input would be great.
On Tuesday April 14, UNCW Presents is playing Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, and PRIDE will be tabling.
For Wednesday or Thursday PRIDE is hoping to have Julia Boseman on campus to talk about being out in politics, legislation involving homosexuality, and how we can influence/lobby such legislation. The day of the event depends on when she is available. The day she doesn’t come speak, PRIDE is planning to do another MyStory in the Clocktower Lounge. MyStory is an open mic/floor event where LGBTIQA students and faculty are invited to share their personal stories through literature, poetry, art, dance, or any other medium.
Finally to end Pride Week on Saturday April 18, there will be a transprom and Diva’s Live. Diva’s Live is PRIDE’s annual spring drag show involving both drag kings and queens and hosted by Tara Nicole. Diva’s Live will be during the transprom, and both are free.
I know I skipped over Friday, but that’s because PRIDE doesn’t know exactly what it’s doing. There’s been talk about having a sit in for the Day of Silence and possibly painting the rock rainbow. As for a breaking the silence event, it’s still in the planning stages.
Now other than Pride Week, PRIDE is participating in Relay for Life which is April 24 & 25.
To register for Team Rainbow:
It costs $10 to register.
From April 3-5 UNC Chapel Hill is having a UNITY Conference which PRIDE will be attending. It’s free for all UNCW members! This year’s theme is: Sweet T: Transgressing, Transforming, and Transcending Gender and Sexuality in the South. If anyone is interested in going, it’s still possible to sign up.
To find out more about UNCW Pride, check out their facebook group. They meet Wednesday nights at 7:00pm in the Saffo Room (FSC 2009, across from the Bookstore in the upstairs of the Fisher Center.)
