whats going on?

Sorry that we haven’t been updating daily like we used to. It doesn’t mean we’re not working on things. In fact, it means that we’ve been working even harder on things that we have totally been neglecting the site.

We just had our 2nd FUNraiser event for our Be Yr Own Hero/Queero Fest scheduled for September 5th-6th in Wilmington, NC. It was an all day bike event called BIKE HYPE, and there might be plans in the future for another one. If you want to be involved with Be Yr Own Hero/Queero Fest please fill out the submission form at: http://beyrownhero.com/hero/?p=73

Deadline is July 15th.

We have lots of things planned and will be moving into the Be Yr Own Hero/Queero Headquarters July 1st. So we’ll try to keep everything updated as they unravel and will definitely step things up once we get settled in.

In the mean time, check out some upcoming events from the NINJATRONICS LAB if you’re into music.

Be Yr Own Hero/Queero meeting March 11th

Be Yr Own Hero/Queero meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Community Action Center (4th & Castle). Have a project you’ve been wanting to get off the ground? Bring your ideas to the meeting and watch what happens!

Check out beyrownhero.com to see what all of the Heroes have been working on: from a community garden and free food to bike rides and art shows, there’s a whole lot of radical happening here in Wilmington!

We will also be planning for the 3rd Annual Hero Fest and 2009 is the time to really queer it up! So you should definitely be thinking about what you want to see at this year’s fest.

Until March 11, take a look at some BYOH photos, and be a Hero on MySpace and Facebook. See you then!

Be Yr Own Hero Meeting Wednesday

Our friends at Be Yr Own Hero are having their monthly meeting this Wednesday. Info below:

When: Wednesday January 14th @ 7:00pm
Where:
Community Action Center (317 Castle St, Wilmington North Carolina)

For those of you who have never been to a meeting before and are wondering what happens at them, we mostly discuss ways that we can make the Really Really Free Market & Food Not Bombs better from what we learn each month.

If you have some ideas of other projects that you would like to see happen in Wilmington, please come to share your ideas! We are all about making Wilmington an ideal progressive/radical community.

We also need lots of help in the outreach department. So if you have access to a photo-copier, please help out by making copies of flyers and distributing them. We’d like to get more UNCW and CFCC students involved, as well as everyone else in the Wilmington area!

Think about the things you are good at doing and how they can be a strength to Be Yr Own Hero.

Fighting the Good Fight.

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season, filled with all the things that matter most to you and yours. I’m writing you to ask you personally to join me in the cause for equality. Too often am I reminded that people are still unjustly treated because of their sexual and or gender orientation. Recently I was reminded on Wednesday, December 24, when I was informed by a co-worker that being gay is acceptable but to be transgenders was not. I was absolutely irate and wanted to go postal on him.   Instead I am writing you. Accepting difference should be literal, acceptance of all difference.  The LGBT community has experienced discrimination unlike any other group cross-culturally. I am sick and tired of hiding my orientation so that others may be comfortable. Over the last month I have collaborated with a few of my closest queer-identified friends to help shape my hometown of  Wilmington, NC  into a safer more accepting community for other queers. Our group, BYOQ has a blog, a fan page on Facebook, and is hosting events and parties in the new year. Together we will educate our community and teach tolerance. We will do absolutely everything we can to help facilitate a stronger and more visible LGBT community in Wilmington. Please join our fan page here. Bookmark the blog. Stay current with the battle for our civil rights, discuss these topics with your straight allies and remind them of your struggles and always defend yourself. We will make a difference.

Very Sincerely,

LB

getting active locally

Wilmington, North Carolina is definitely not the most progressive city in the world. That doesn’t mean that we can’t have a strong community. There are things going on in this town that really need the support of active and positive people.

I mentioned ealier that BYOQ is a division of Be Yr Own Hero, but that doesn’t mean the two have to be separate entities. In fact, they are pretty much the same thing as both thrive on a DIY ethic, except BYOQ places an emphasis on LGBTQ issues. For those of you who are searching for artists, musicians, punks, bike punks, anarchists, queers, hippies, gypsies, or whatever other label people have thrown on us, look no further.

Once a month we all come together to cook as the local Food Not Bombs chapter, and the next day we serve the food to anyone who is hungry at the Really Really Free Market (RRFM), where people can bring items they no longer need and skills that they can share with others. The RRFM takes place on the first Sunday of each month @ 12:00noon at the Community Action Center (317 Castle St.) Food Not Bombs cooking takes place the night before at 6:00pm. Dates for all 2009 RRFM dates below:

This is a great opportunity to meet others with similar interests while building a stronger community. Our town is small enough that we should all be helping each other.

To find out more information about getting involved with Food Not Bombs & the Really Really Free Market please join the BYOH mailing list. I will try to cross post all BYOH events to BYOQ, but activist burnout may occur. So just because it’s not posted, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
