An estimated 128 Iraqis are presently on death row for the criminal offense of homosexuality. Ali Hili of Iraqi-LGBT (based in London, banned from Iraqi soil) suspects that executions will begin this week in groups of 20. According to an article in UKGayNews, the use of the death penalty has greatly increased since new Iraqi administration in 2004. The condition of their judicial system, the...

The Anti-Queeros
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church (scary) from Topeka, KS held a “protest” yesterday in front of the White House. These are the infamous “God Hates Fags” people. Yeah, them. They held up signs calling Barack Obama the “Antichrist” and, the one I liked the most, “YOU WILL EAT YOUR BABIES.” Hell yes, I will. Anyway, Shirley...

Boone NC scores some gay points
Who would have thought? The small town of Boone is now the 3rd city in North Carolina to include sexual orientation and gender identity in their employment policies. Chapel HIll and Carrboro are the other two cities that include both in their policies as well. Things are looking up for North Carolina! (source EqualityNC.org)

'Role Models' who make gay jokes
What kind of qualities do you want in a Role Model? Well, according to the movie Role Models, telling gay jokes and picking on gay people are a few qualities to have. My Gay Nerve wrote a blog post after seeing the movie and discussed the poor use of gay jokes throughout the film. His blog received the attention of David Wain, the Director and Co-Writer of the film who replied saying: ...

Whaaaaat?? Seriously? Why does it seem like the more religious you are, the more you condone violence? I don’t call myself an athiest or agnostic. I don’t believe in any “higher being”. I believe in myself and that’s what keeps me going everyday. When things bother me or when I don’t agree with something, I take a step back and think about WHY i am so bothered...

QueerArt Wednesday
Fernando Carpaneda is an artist born in Brasília, Brazil. He works with clay sculptures. His main theme is always the human being. He watches people in the streets, bars, concerts, and places where people sell their bodies. Fernando makes portraits of rent boys, punks, junkies, thieves and outcasts. Instead of attaching himself to muses, he focuses on male nudes to compose his art pieces, having...

Good Things To Know:
Inspired by Scantron’s story, I decided to do a little research on Civil Unions vs. Marriage. While I’m terribly passionate about equality as a principle and deeply invested in the outcome of the same-sex marriage war, I realized that I knew very few facts. I thought I’d share my findings so that we can all take a progressive and better informed step together :) — Please...

my trip to new mexico
A few weeks ago, I went to New Mexico. It was very emotional to say the least. My dad, grandma (my dad’s mom) and I went out there to visit my great grandma (my dad’s mom’s mom) and my great uncle (my dad’s mom’s brother). It was pretty depressing knowing that my great grandma is going to pass away pretty soon, but it was also really nice to see that she is very...

Womanist Musings - "Queer is a State of Mind" →
naomiwaxman: This description of what queer means is among the most articulate, apt assessments I’ve come across. Also, this blog http://www.womanist-musings.com is really excellent and worth reading. “Some straight people still have trouble with the word queer, viewing it as a politically incorrect word. It’s not. It has a meaning that is distinct from gay and lesbian. There are even queer...

Queers are the Spice of Life
Judgment is the most automatic response for humans. (It is raining, do I wear flip flops or galoshes? I’m drunk, should I have another whiskey?) With every choice, we try to use our best reasoning to achieve the desired outcome. But, the age-old gift of logic to our once mushy minds became a curse as soon as we began to restrict the parameters of our judgement. Just because black and white...

How to be a (Responsible) Queer Person: Step 5
Step 5: Make a Family Not to go all heteronormative on you, but you should marry someone of the opposite sex and have a ton of babies (yes, even you in the red button-up with the square glasses and sad smile; you’re getting up there in years). Not really, but the idea of family is more important than the actual appearance of that family. It does not just mean you and a partner and...

North Carolina has carved its history as the progressive rabble-rouser of the South. As such, being a citizen of North Carolina affords you certain dignities, one of which is being able to recite your state’s rich history to anyone willing to listen. Such momentous events include acting as the birthplace of the first English child in the ‘New World’, being the last state to join the Confederacy in...
